Covid-19 Update: We are manufacturing, supplying and working as normal
Toxic but effective wood preservatives such as creosote, CCA and Pentachlorophenol (penta) are widely used to prevent decay in wooden utility poles. These preservatives typically give a pole life of 35 years or more. Unfortunately, these wood preservatives are harmful to health and the environment.
C.C.A. contains highly toxic arsenic and creosote and pentachlorophenol are classified as carcinogenic and very persistent biotoxins. It is for these reasons that the use of these wood preservatives has or is going to be banned in many regions.
There are a number of alternative wood preservatives available that are safer and less harmful to the environment. These wood preservatives all rely on copper as the primary biocide to prevent decay and are available in many forms such as alkaline copper quaternary compounds (ACQ), copper azole (CuAz), ammoniacal copper zinc arsenate (ACZA), copper citrate and copper HDO (CuHDO).
In reality these alternatives are not as effective as traditional wood preservatives as they provide protection that fades over time, they can be difficult to use consistently or lack long term test data to show effectiveness. This is a problem for utilities as any reduction in pole life or performance can have a significant impact on costs, safety and grid resilience in bad weather.
Over 25 years we have built a strong record in providing a highly effective, proven solution to this problem. When used with alternative reduced toxicity wood preservatives Polesaver’s proven barrier sleeves prevent decay at the ground-line section of the pole maximising pole life to 50 years or more whilst ensuring strength is maintained over time for improved safety and grid resilience.
Short & Long Term Cost Reductions
Polesaver is the lowest cost pole option. It significantly reduces pole maintenance and replacement costs.
Improve Safety & Reliability
Polesaver improves the safety and reliability of your network making it safer for your staff and the public.
Achieve CSR Objectives
Polesaver reduces your environmental impact by lowering pole replacement requirements.
The Proven & Tested Alternative To Creosote
The licence for the use of creosote wood preservative in Europe is due to be reviewed in March 2021. It is unlikely that the licence will be renewed at this point.
Polesaver is a proven and highly cost-effective alternative to creosote when used with established water-based copper type wood preservatives

Polesaver ground-line barrier sleeves are a dual-layer, high-performance sleeve that prevents ground rot in wooden utility poles. Polesaver Sleeves are guaranteed for 50 years.
How do Polesaver Sleeves work?
Polesaver sleeves are non-toxic, composite barrier sleeves. They feature a dual-layer construction with an outer thermoplastic sleeve and inner thermoplastic liner.
Upon heating, the liner melts, and the outer sleeve shrinks down tightly onto the pole to create a tough, air and watertight seal to the pole surface.
This air and watertight seal permanently excludes all the factors necessary for wood decay to occur, whilst also preventing loss of wood preservative. Polesaver’s dual-layer technology makes conventional ground line decay impossible.
Improve Network Safety & Reliability
Wooden utility poles are the only “non-engineered” component used in power distribution. Made from natural materials they rely on preservatives for protection from decay (partial protection).
Over time preservatives loose effectiveness due to leaching and oxidation, leading to ground-line decay and loss of strength. Combined with variations in-ground conditions, it is easy to see why wooden pole life often varies.
These variables mean wooden utility poles require regular inspection, testing and often replacement as they age. The use of a Polesaver ground-line sleeves provides a total barrier to the causes of ground-line decay. This barrier maximises pole life while preventing loss of strength over time, ensuring improved safety for staff who climb poles and members of the public.
Reach Your CSR Objectives
Polesaver reduces your environmental impact by reducing the loss of wood preservatives and utility pole replacement rates.
Longer wooden utility pole life and reducing the need to replace poles helps reduce your CO2 output and environmental impact.
With environmental targets becoming of increasing importance, Polesaver can help your utility company meet these targets.
